Why is a congitive test important? [Top]
Public service employees and key performers in any organization have heavy responsibilities. Tasks like driving and signal monitoring are generally automatic processes. When something unexpected happens, or when conditions become hazardous, controlled cognitive processing is essential. Individuals must switch rapidly between automatic and controlled processing to assure safe, reliable behavior. This is why an objective test of the underlying cognitive competencies is needed for jobs that are task-specific.

What congitive processes are specific to vililance tesks? [Top]
The decision to switch between automatic and controlled thinking is heavily dependent on executive function. Competence requires an individual to be sufficiently alert to notice that conditions have changed. This is reflected in concentration and attention skills. Decision-making needs to be quick and appropriate to deal with changed conditions. To do this, information must be held within working memory. This new information then needs to be compared with older memories, including known safety protocols. Finally the right decision needs to made, communicated and executed quickly. This requires efficient language and sensory motor skills. The Cogntive Testing Battery the is the only available standardized and automated system which assesses all of these core cognitive competencies.

Is the Cognitive Testing Battery time consuming? [Top]
The assessment takes under an hour to complete. Individual reports, which have been centrally analysed and scored, are delivered within 48 hours via a secure website. Group reporting is also available. This means minimal time off for the worker, increased efficiencies for the company psychologist and very clear normative comparisons to support the safety and training decision-making processes.

What are the benefits of an automated test battery? [Top]
The battery of tests is delivered by a fully automated IBM touchscreen computer. Use of the touchscreen itself offers additional objective data about speed of response and error rates. Instructions and equipment are fully standardized across all sites. The results are automatically uploaded to BRC’s central processing system. No identifying data is sent with the results; only an ID code. Confidentiality is absolute. Individual’s results are compared against their same sex, age and education matched peers from our large and standardized International Brain Database. Objectivity is the main benefit of automation.

Who gets the results and how are they used? [Top]
The results go to the company psychologist or safety officer who can use the data as part of recruitment information, overall risk management and training needs assessment. The test does not have to be administered by a Psychologist. In fact the Psychologist receiving the report can be located elsewhere. The cost efficiencies of reliable and standardized, remote testing are substantial.
